Misc. Quotes

I came across a few quotes today that seemed like they should be shared. Some are goofy, and some are frightfully true.

Quotes on Children:

Parents are not interested in justice; they are interested in quiet.  ~Bill Cosby

If your kids are giving you a headache, follow the directions on the aspirin bottle, especially the part that says "keep away from children."  ~Susan Savannah

When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. - Mark Twain

The thing that impresses me most about America is the way parents obey their children.  ~Edward, Duke of Windsor, Look, 5 March 1957

Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.  ~Robert Fulghum

Quotes on Books: (my favorite)

A wonderful thing about a book, in contrast to a computer screen, is that you can take it to bed with you. - Daniel J. Boorstein

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed on and digested - Frances Bacon

Books are not made for furniture, but there is nothing else that so beautifully furnishes a house. - Henry Ward Beecher

Quotes on Government:

A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves. - Edwar Murrow

They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security - Benjamin Franklin

Whatever is Christian is legal; whatever is not is illegal. - David Barton

The only thing that saves us from the bureaucracy is inefficiency. An efficient bureaucracy is the greatest threat to liberty. - Eugene McCarthy

The government is merely a servant -- merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them. - Mark Twain

(the following one I couldn't help but laugh at the irony of it.)
I always believe that ultimately, if people are paying attention, then we get good government and good leadership. And when we get lazy, as a democracy and civically start taking shortcuts, then it results in bad government and politics. - Barack Obama

Random Quotes:

A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go but ought to be. - Rosalynn Carter

Joy is the best makeup. - Ann Lamott

Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has not heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains. - Winston Churchhill

All schools, all colleges, have two great functions: to confer, and to conceal, valuable knowledge. The theological knowledge which they conceal cannot justly be regarded as less valuable than that which they reveal. That is, when a man is buying a basket of strawberries it can profit him to know that the bottom half of it is rotten. - Mark Twain

Reason 4,986,456,375 to have government-run health care

Was going over my stack of "currently reading" books on my nightstand. (most of them, I've only gotten as far as the prologue.) And was running the ever-running question over my head. "How am I ever suppose to read all of these books." Then a grand thought dashed into my mind.

(this is not my nightstand, but it's pretty darn close to what the stack looks like)

We should have government-run health care, then we'd have all the time in the world, since we'll all be standing in-line to get care. Think about it. ;-)
(if you've seen my blogroll, then you'll know where I stand on the issue)

18 Random Things

One of my best friends, Abbie, turned 18 last Friday, and today she had a surprise party at her house. So I thought I'd be fun to write "18 Random Things" about Abbie.
Here we go!
  1. She absolutely loves LOTR's. (but she'd never admit it)
  2. She's always got her nose in a book.
  3. She won't make fun/tease you.
  4. She helps anyone to laugh at their mistakes.
  5. She loves to seek the approval of her parents.
  6. She really loves dogs.
  7. She really, really loves cats.
  8. She really, really, really, loves horses
  9. She's always ready to help someone with anything.
  10. She's always helping her mom to keep her 5 younger siblings in line. ;-)
  11. She'll laugh at any joke. (even a stupid one. ;-))
  12. She's very conservative about spending her money.
  13. She'll never make you feel like the outsider.
  14. She has a, "Let's get it done now" attitude.
  15. She's an excellent writer.
  16. She can communicate with anyone about anything.
  17. She loves to talk, but also knows when to shut-up keep her mouth shut.
  18. She always keeps the conversation going.

Guess What!!

I got to meet a very special family today. Wanna guess who? I'll give you a hint. They have 18(soon to be 19) kids. Yes, that's right. I meet the Duggar family! It was wonderful! They came to speak at a church near our town. We made sure to take our camera, and our book for them to sign. 16 out of 18 came with Jim Bob and Michelle. It was great to actually "see" them in person, in stead of watching them on T.V.
(sorry about the poor quality. lighting was terrible, and camera was shaky)

Here they are! (it took me forever 5 seconds of adjusting to get them all to fit in the frame.)

They sang a hymn, but I don't remember which one. Sorry! =D

All the children play the piano and violin. Here they are performing "Onward Christian Soldiers".

And then Michelle told us that they had memorized Exodus 20:1-17 by putting hand motions to the words. By the looks of their hands, their on number commandment number 7.

After that Jim Bob and Michelle spoke. They talked about how they meet, yearly marriage life, their commitment to living debt free, how they got a show on TLC, and how they came to have 18 children!

All in all, it was a great experience! I don't know when I'll see them again, but I do know that this is one thing that I won't be forgetting anytime soon.

Wow! Truly Indescribable!

I found this video from Louie Gilgo on youtube and after I saw it
I was in awe.
All five parts are about fifty minutes long, and I would really encourage you to please take the time to watch it all.

You won't be disappointed! I promise.

Our Future?

I saw this video back in April and it really shook me. Although I had heard of this, it really had never been laid out for me this way.

Very sobering.

Awesome News!!!

My absolute favorite show on tv has got to be 18 Kids and Counting!! I've been watching it since it debuted in September of '08. Since I'm sure most of you know about them, so I'll spare you the details.

As I was skimming through my blogs I came across some exciting news. Wanna guess? Yep. She's pregnant again! You can go here for the press release. And then here to read Michelle's blog. What I found funny was that in May 2008 the family, yes all of them, went to NYC. They were on the TODAY show to announce that they were excpecting #18. And then almost exactly one year later she got pregnant with #19! Pretty neat huh!

Oh, and by the way. Their oldest son got married last year and are excpecting their first in Oct. 18.
